In 2003, Van Abbemuseum's existing building – designed by A.J. Kropholler in the 1930s – was renovated and greatly extended by the architect Abel Cahen. Cahen's striking design is clad grey Flammet slate from Lapland, which changes from silver-grey to dark anthracite depending on the weather. This restrained, angular exterior contrasts with the light-filled and complex interior designed in conjunction with Maarten van Severen. At its heart is a 27-metre-high tower with inward-sloping walls, from which every floor opens out. Sweeping flights of stairs and a musical lift form striking vertical transitions. Each floor has a distinct identity, with a variety of different spaces offering scope for intimate as well as monumental exhibitions.
