Evoluon opened in 1966 as a science & technology museum, marking the 75th anniversary of the Philips company in Eindhoven. The origins of its futuristic flying saucer shape are unclear: according to one version, it was sketched on a napkin during a conversation between the Design Director of Philips, L C Kalff, and Frits Philips. The architect L L J de Bever was co-opted to the project shortly afterwards. After years of falling visitor numbers the museum closed in 1989, and the building reopened as a conference centre in 1998. The concrete dome is 77 metres in diameter, resting on twelve V-shaped columns. Internally, there are three 10 metre wide circular walkways, with a total area of 4,700 sq metres.
