The Lafayette Park development includes a 19-acre park and a complex of apartment and housing cooperatives in the city's lower east side just east of downtown Detroit. The area is part of the Mies van der Rohe residential district listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The apartment buildings of Lafayette Park are classic examples of Mies' International Style, with their simplicity, clean proportions, and cladding of tined glass and aluminum. Most of the units' interiors, save a few with original (and aging) owners, are in fair to poor shape, but their bones are all still completely solid and the community is vibrant and strong. The homeowners did a complete renovation of their interior leaving the original floorplan intact. The neighborhood is a rare working example of utopian modernist urban renewal.
