FERNANDO GUERRA

Born Lisbon in 1970, graduated in architecture in 1993 in Lisbon, worked in Macau as an architect 1994-9 and taught architecture studios in Arca-Euac in Coimbra, Portugal 1999-2005.

Together with his brother, Sergio Guerra, who takes care of the business side, they founded the studio FG+SG in 1999. Fernando has been taking photographs since he was 16 years old.

They also constitute a publishing house: FG+SG Livros de Imagem. Their work is regularly published in several architecture magazines and monograph publications such as Casabella, A+U, Dwell, El Croquis, Icon and Domus.

Fernando works mainly to commission for architects. His clients include the most important Portuguese architects: Alvaro Siza, Goncalo Byrne, Manuel Salgado, Graca Dias, ARX Portugal, Promontorio Arquitectos, Aires Mateus among others, but the studio also seeks new practices with exciting new work.

The power of an image to light up an aspect of reality is to everyone's knowledge, enormous. A good photographer of architecture can create the bridge to communicate a new body of architectural work, to reveal a work to the world in an unprecedented way - our images of Alvaro Siza's Adega Mayor special on our web site had 27,000 visits all around the world in 30 days. In the public domain, the recognition of exceptional built work is many times associated to its image register. This is an incredibly interesting responsibility for the photographer. Contemporarily, we are at the edge of a new revolution for the image: new digital formats and techniques, serve a "now" society marked by the desire of instant gratification. The future is at arms length, but the way there should be as enjoyable as the arrival.
